The Cleft Project

Find one child who needs cleft lip and palate surgery, and adopt the whole family. That was the idea behind The Cleft Project, launched by Steve Bender and three Rotary clubs in two countries, and it changed the life of a little boy named Christopher.

How it began

“He had the saddest eyes”

Years ago, on a humanitarian mission in Mexico, Steve Bender saw a group of children throwing rocks at a little boy. The boy had a cleft palate, and he had become the outcast of his neighborhood. Steve never forgot the way the boy looked at him. From that moment, The Cleft Project was born.

Steve presented the idea to the Rotary Club of Newport Beach Sunrise in 2014, and the club got behind it. Club Rotario Rosarito and Club Rotario Playas de Rosarito joined as partners, and Rotarian Rolando Quintero of Rosarito became the project manager. The Quiroz family’s clinic in Tijuana, Cosmed at VIDA, agreed to perform the surgeries.

The mission is simple: find a child in need of cleft lip or palate surgery and, in essence, adopt the entire family. Beyond surgery, The Cleft Project provides clothing, toys and supplies, so the child can become the champion of the community instead of an outcast.

Christopher’s story

Growing up with the Ayuda family

Rolando Quintero found the project’s first patient through a notice in the local newspaper. Christopher Morales was a little boy from the Rosarito area with a cleft lip. He was chosen because of his age and the difficulty of his case. Every year since, the Ayuda family has followed him as he has grown, with visits, toys and presents.

Beyond one child

A model for Rotary clubs everywhere

“With everything we do, we want to show that this works and have other clubs adopt the program,” Steve told the Newport Beach Indy. The Cleft Project went on to explore missions in Ensenada, Mexico, in Arequipa, Peru with the Yorba Linda Sunrise Rotary Club, and in Agra, India, and today it is one of the models Ayuda shares through 100 Projects in 100 Countries.
